New Post Office for Bryher

New community shop and Post Office for Bryher

People on Bryher, Isles of Scilly, are
celebrating with the news that they are to get their own community
shop and post office.

Since the closure of Bryher Stores & Post
Office at the end of autumn 2010, more than 70 residents have been
without on-island access to even basic provisions. Buying something
as simple as a pint of milk has meant a trek to the neighbouring
islands of Tresco or St Mary’s.

Now, thanks to a Rural Development Programme
for England (RDPE) grant of £169,000 through the Island’s Local
Action Group (LAG), the community can look forward to having a new
shop and post office.

And it looks set to be a dream come true for
local resident  Zoe Dan as she will get chance to run her own
business on the island on which she grew up.

Commenting on the news, Councillor Marian
Bennett said the lack of a shop had posed serious challenges for
everyone but particularly elderly and more vulnerable members of
the community.

“The shop and post office are vital elements
of daily island life,” she said. “The past few months, without a
shop close by, have been especially difficult for older and less
mobile islanders.  We are all relieved and happy that with
this good news we can look forward again to a shop on
Bryher.”

The project also recognises the role a shop
and post office has to play in safeguarding the island’s
economy.

“Our visitors expect to be able to buy food
and drink when they arrive so the thought of arriving on an island
without access to even basic foodstuffs can deter not only first
time visitors but even those who know their way around,“ said
accommodation provider and local resident Amy Langdon.

The shop and post office development is being
led by the Duchy of Cornwall in partnership with island residents
has evolved over period of 12 months, during which the search for a
suitable tenant led to Zoe Dan being chosen.

The new shop which aims to be open by early
summer 2011 looks to meet the needs of residents and visitors,
offering as well as general provisions the following services: a
tourist information point, a delivery service for both islanders
and holiday makers, an outlet for local produce, a bakery, Wi-Fi
access and of course a post office.
